“Gaman – to endure the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity.” I heard a Japanese “enemy non-alien” recall that internees in the WWII Japanese concentration camps were only allowed to eat whatever they could fit in an aluminum pie tin. Fencing off the Other with barbed wire is not a new concept. This excerpt was reimagined from my MFA thesis work, “The Spectacular Society,” and shot at California Institute of the Arts March 2018.
